About the project Pass it on

Selected localities simultaneously represent distant urban situations and the initiatives that focused on cultural heritage in their applications at Rijeka 2020. As virtually all neighborhoods of the Primorje-Goranska County dedicated some part of their applications to cultural heritage, the curated localities / neighbourhoods are chosen primarily because of activities and goals that are primarily concerned with solving a community problem related to the existing heritage. They do not deal with the development of activities and programs solely for the purpose of creating a cultural-tourist offer, instead the added value of the subject is precisely the perspective of heritage in the context of identity, maintaining and preserving it, and adding value to that same preservation and preservation in the culture of living.
The STEPS program and project “Pass it On”, includes direct work with the community under the expert guidance of various experts and artists through which the program units / activities for Rijeka 2020 will be formed.

STEPS

STEPS is a EU-CoE Joint pilot project which aims at building and strengthening community cohesion, promoting trust, dialogue and mutual understanding across diverse societies, through participatory heritage mapping.

Through participatory mapping, community members collectively create visual inventories of their own community’s assets on a map. This results in a map of those heritage assets that make up the pluralist identity of the community. Assets can include built, as well as intangible heritage features (traditions, practices, knowledge and expressions of human creativity), anything that people who live and work in the territories feel it is significant to them, in line with the Faro principles.

This process facilitates an understanding of what these features mean to individuals and how they impact each other. The group will gain insight into the specific value granted to community assets by different community members.

STEPS within Rijeka 2020

STEPS is a platform supporting participatory process to mobilise diverse heritage as a resource for community cohesion.
For this reason, STEPS worked on 5 from 27 neighbourhoods of Rijeka to undercover not only the contrast of different historical times but also all geographical aspects of Rijeka neighbourhoods – the coast, the urban area, islands, and highlands.
The objectives of taking part to STEPS were to give visibility of these remote areas, recognise different aspects of heritage, which is in case of Rijeka belongs to the European history and culture, and different cultural influences. All of this while representing Rijeka within a boarder European context.
